Understanding Orthodontics & Orthodontists
Do braces hurt?
Getting braces fitted is generally painless. You may experience some tenderness and mild discomfort for a few days after braces are placed and following adjustment appointments as your teeth begin to move.
This is completely normal and can be managed with over-the-counter pain relief if needed. Modern low-profile brackets and advanced wire technology mean today's braces are significantly more comfortable than those of previous generations.
What foods should I avoid with braces?
To protect your braces and keep treatment on track, avoid:
• Hard foods: Nuts, hard lollies, ice, raw carrots, apples (cut into small pieces instead)
• Sticky foods: Chewing gum, caramels, toffees, liquorice
• Chewy foods: Bagels, tough meat, crusty bread
We'll provide a comprehensive guide when you start treatment. Remember, these restrictions are temporary—your beautiful smile will be worth the short-term adjustments!
Can I play sports with braces?
Yes! You can continue playing sports with braces. We strongly recommend wearing a mouthguard during any contact or high-impact activities like rugby, netball, hockey, basketball, and martial arts.
We can provide orthodontic-specific mouthguards designed to fit comfortably over braces while protecting both your teeth and appliances. Don't let braces stop you from staying active—just take appropriate precautions.
What if a bracket breaks or wire comes loose?
Don't panic—orthodontic emergencies happen occasionally. If a bracket breaks or wire comes loose, contact our clinic on +64 27 261 4616 and we'll arrange a repair appointment.
In the meantime, you can use orthodontic wax (provided in your starter kit) to cover any sharp edges causing irritation. If a wire is poking, try gently pushing it back with a clean pencil eraser. Most issues can wait a day or two for repair without affecting your treatment.
